BVI = Paradise

shannastewart4443

“Let the waves hit your feet, and the sand be your seat.”

For my 50th birthday, my husband, some friends and I sailed the British Virgin Islands. It was truly a fantastic experience! In this post, I will tell you when to visit, where to stay, as well as some of the many things to do in the BVI.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a tropical paradise where pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and gentle trade winds create an idyllic escape from the everyday. Nestled in the Caribbean, this archipelago of over 60 islands boasts a perfect blend of natural beauty, nautical adventures, and laid-back luxury. Whether you're setting sail through the vibrant waters of the Sir Francis Drake Channel, diving into the hidden underwater treasures of The Baths, or unwinding with island-inspired cuisine at a beachside retreat, the BVI offers something for every traveler. Let the charm of these untouched islands steal your heart and redefine your idea of paradise.

Best time to visit:

  • December to April: This is the peak season, with sunny skies, pleasant breezes, and minimal rainfall. It's perfect for beachgoers and sailors, but expect higher prices and more crowds.

  • May to August: A quieter time with warm temperatures and fewer tourists. It's great for budget travelers, but keep in mind that the hurricane season begins in June.

  • September to November: These months see the most rainfall and are part of the hurricane season. However, you can find excellent deals on accommodations and enjoy a more tranquil experience.

You can choose to sail as we did or stay on one island and visit the others from your main base. We used The Moorings for a Bareboat Catamaran - BVI Yacht Charters & Sailing Vacations in the Caribbean. If you would like to charter a boat with a captain/crew, The Moorings do this, as well.

How to get to the BVI:

Getting to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) involves a combination of flights, ferries, and sometimes private charters. Here are the main ways to reach this tropical paradise:

  1. Via St. Thomas, USVI: Many travelers fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and then take a ferry to Tortola or other BVI islands. Ferries run frequently and are a popular option.

  2. Via San Juan, Puerto Rico: Fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and take a connecting flight to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Tortola. This is one of the most direct routes.

  3. Direct Flights: Some airlines offer direct flights to Tortola from Miami, Florida (MIA), making it a convenient option for travelers from the U.S.

  4. Via Other Caribbean Islands: You can also connect through other Caribbean hubs like Antigua (ANU), St. Maarten (SXM), or Barbados (BGI), and then take a flight or ferry to the BVI.

  5. Private Charters: For a more exclusive experience, private flights or boat charters can be arranged from nearby islands or directly from the mainland.

  6. Sailing: If you're an avid sailor, you can charter a yacht or join a sailing tour to reach the BVI, which is known as a premier sailing destination.
