Tennerhof Hotel
5-Star Hotel
The hotel world would be a boring one indeed if no one bothered to innovate. But the joys of a family-owned boutique hotel that’s rooted in the regional tradition shouldn’t be underestimated, especially when it’s as finely crafted and lovingly maintained as the Hotel Tennerhof in the Austrian Alps. This Tyrolean resort is part upscale ski lodge and part wellness retreat, with just as much to offer in summer as in ski season.
Since 1929, the Pasquali family has been decorating the thirty-nine guest rooms with heirlooms and antiques that reflect the heritage of the region. Even if you’re normally allergic to the storybook charms and whimsy of ornate wardrobes and headboards painted with pastel scenery, suspend your initial reaction for a closer look — this is priceless handmade stuff, not kitsch. At the higher end, suites tend to be a bit more subdued, with big glass doors opening out onto private terraces. It goes without saying that the Alpine view is magnificent, and skiers will find the quick walk to the Kitzbüheler slopes to be a blessing.
The hotel’s restaurant specializes in romantic candlelight dinners, which can be enjoyed on the terrace when it’s not covered in snow. The wine cellar is suitably expansive, with plenty of opportunity for regional pairings with the restaurant’s original creations. Make no mistake: this is a sumptuous experience, so if you’re craving a utilitarian ski-bum retreat, you’d be better served elsewhere. To put it another way, if you’re likely to cap off a long day on the slopes with a trip to the sauna and a glass of excellent wine, then this is the hotel for you.

Kitzbühel Old Town: Stroll through the charming cobblestone streets of Kitzbühel, featuring historic buildings, boutique shops, and delightful cafés.

Traveling to Whistler, Canada, is an exhilarating experience, especially for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to enjoy stunning natural beauty.
For more information on Whistler, see my post:
When to visit Whistler:
Whistler is renowned for its skiing and snowboarding, with the ski season typically running from late November to mid-April. December through February sees the most snowfall and peak tourist activity.
Average snowfall: 36-39'
Ski Runs: 200 (and offers a diverse range of terrain for all skill levels.)
The terrain caters to all skill levels, from beginner slopes to challenging runs for advanced skiers.
Where to stay in Whistler:
Budget Pick: Sundial Hotel
Situated at the foot of Whistler Blackcomb Mountain, in the heart of the village, discover a unique beauty amongst the vast coastal wilderness that inspires and fulfills your inner curiosity. At Sundial Hotel, guests receive friendly service, local insider advice, and the comfort needed to relax and rejuvenate. All of our guests have exclusive use of the rooftop hot tub. A perfect end to your day surrounded by mountains. All suites feature fully equipped kitchens, gas fireplaces and bathrooms with heated slate floors.
Nita Lake Lodge
4-Star Hotel
The Nita Lake Lodge starts with a prestigious location in the Creekside area of the Western Canadian resort town of Whistler, outside of the main Village area. It’s part of a growing movement toward modern ski hotels, something that’s catching on perhaps more quickly here (perhaps owing to the 2010 Olympics) than elsewhere in North America. And if it means more luxurious modern-rustic lodges like this one, then it’s a trend we have no problem endorsing.
With 77 suites, it’s fairly modest in size, but the accommodations are anything but cramped. The smallest is a studio suite, and it still comes with a fireplace and a 40-inch LCD television, not to mention geothermally heated floors and oversized modern bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. The look is contemporary, a little bit minimalist chic, but still warm and inviting, in earth tones and natural wood and stone.
A spa and fitness center are part of the modern ski-resort package, as is a restaurant serving dishes drawn from largely organic and local B.C. produce. The distance from Whistler Village turns out to be a plus; Creekside is quieter, a bit more of an escape, and the lift from Creekside goes to the top of the very same Whistler Mountain.
Fairmont Chateau Whistler
At the foot of Blackcomb mountain, you’ll find what many rate as the finest ski hotel in North America, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler. This massive ski-in ski-out castle is, on the inside, surprisingly warm and inviting, more like a traditional country retreat than a big-time corporate chain hotel, with rustic wooden beams supporting the lobby’s ceiling, and an elegant, traditional look to the guest rooms, far from the utilitarian anti-style of many ski hotels.
Of course, comfort is king, in any ski resort, and there’s nothing fussy about this place—however fine the furnishings, there’s nothing that couldn’t take an accidental kick from a ski-booted foot. Views are rather impressive, whether of the mountains, the village, or the ski slopes themselves, and the enormous soaking tubs come in handy after a long day on the slopes. The gold-level rooms have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs, and offer access to a private lounge.
The best spa in town operates within the hotel, and the heated outdoor pool and Jacuzzis are open to all guests. And even in summer, this place loses none of its luster; the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf course is one of the region’s finest, made more challenging by the unpredictable British Columbia landscape.

Eden Hotel Bormio
4-Star Hotel
Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel are the sort of designers whose names come as an instant recommendation, sight unseen. Not that Bormio, in the Alpine region of far-northern Lombardy, is a tough sell — but the Eden Hotel Bormio’s contemporary re-interpretation of the alpine-lodge idiom is nothing short of spectacular. The rooms and suites are modern but sacrifice no warmth, and the comforts are first-rate. Eden Restaurant by Chef Giovanni Caracciolo is a consciously Modernist-inspired fine-dining restaurant — Jackson Pollock is an acknowledged influence — and the hotel’s proximity to ski runs, hiking trails, and vineyards makes it a year-round destination.
Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi
5-Star Hotel
It’s been a while since these bagni were really nuovi — the thermal baths at Bormio, in the far Alpine north of Lombardy, have been an attraction since at least the Roman Empire, and the hotel dates back to 1836. As a destination for foreign visitors it may not be on the same level as your Tuscanys, your Amalfis, your Lake Comos. But if the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi is any indication, Bormio is capable of playing in Italian hospitality’s highest league.
It starts with some subtle design, as throughout the seventy-four rooms and suites, restraint is the watchword. Historical elements meet contemporary design with that thoroughly Italian effortlessness. Space is plentiful, as it should be, and there’s more than a touch of luxury: many of the white marble-clad bathrooms feature whirlpool baths fed by thermal waters, and the Royal Suite, built for Vittorio Emanuele III, still holds his original pink Candoglia marble bathtub.
When it comes to facilities you’re spoilt for choice. In addition to the grand dining room and the café, Bagni Nuovi guests have access to the restaurant at the sister hotel, the Bagni Vecchi. Same goes for the spa — the Bagni Nuovi’s treatment rooms are more than extensive enough, but the Vecchi’s add a bit of variety. A shuttle connects the two, and also links you to the ski lift, giving both hotels’ guests the run of the town.
Things to do in Bormio:
Skiing and Snowboarding: Bormio boasts around 50 km (approximately 31 miles) of ski slopes, catering to all skill levels. The area is known for its challenging runs, including the famous "Stelvio" slope, used in World Cup races.
Thermal Baths: After a day on the slopes, relax at the Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi thermal baths, which offer natural hot springs and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Hiking and Biking: Explore beautiful trails in the summer, with routes suitable for both casual walkers and experienced hikers. Mountain biking is also popular, with various trails available.
Cultural Experiences: Visit the historic town center, featuring charming streets, local shops, and significant landmarks like the Church of San Vitale and the Bormio Museum.
Food and Wine: Enjoy local cuisine at traditional restaurants, featuring dishes like pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta) and bresaola (air-dried beef). Pair your meals with excellent local wines.

RockyPop Chamonix - Les Houches
It’s fair to say RockyPop isn’t the easiest word to pronounce in a sober and dignified tone — but given that the hotel’s stated aim is to shake up the conventional image of the Alpine ski lodge, we’ll happily grant them license to have a bit of fun with the name. And as you arrive in Les Houches, just outside of Chamonix, it’s clear from a glance at the marquee, proudly emblazoned with the phrase “we will RockyPop you,” that they’re in it all the way — this is the ski-resort version of the accessible, youth-oriented boutique hotels that have been taking the world’s cities by storm.
To that end, RockyPop features fun, vibrantly colored guest rooms, with a bare minimum of old-fashioned luxury — they’re comfortable enough, to be sure, but for this audience, reading lights, comfortable duvets, and HD televisions with unlimited video-on-demand are all you really need. The restaurant is similarly laid-back and casual, with a bit of a food-truck theme going on, and a communal-dining vibe that livens the mood. And they don’t neglect the basics; the ski shop carries everything you need for rental or sale, whether you’re a snowshoer, a skier, or — let’s be honest, far more likely — a snowboarder.
Refuge du Montenvers
In contrast with the wooden lodges common to the French Alps, the Refuge du Montenvers is a rugged stone structure, and one of the earliest Alpine hotels. Its most unique attribute is its position at the edge of the Mer de Glace, a spectacular valley glacier. It’s also unusual for its isolation: it’s only accessible via a half-hour train journey from Chamonix. The hotel’s own restaurant is a cozy wood-paneled space, and this high-altitude escape is also home to the Panoramique Mer de Glace, a bistro with a jaw-dropping view of the Aguilles du Dru peaks and the eponymous glacier.
Hotel Mont-Blanc Chamonix
5-Star Hotel
With a name as definitive as the Hôtel Mont-Blanc Chamonix, it’s clear this is no upstart — after a hundred years in business, though, the Mont-Blanc has been thoroughly redesigned by the interior architect Sybille de Margerie. The result is equal parts Alpine charm, Belle Époque elegance, and contemporary cool, and the comforts have kept pace with expectations in this most luxurious of ski towns — they details like Bose sound systems and Nespresso machines. Skiing, obviously, is central to the hotel’s appeal, as is the Spa Clarins, and the Restaurant Le Matafan and Le Bar Lounge are the icing on the cake.
