Stretching nearly 500 miles from the steaming fumaroles of Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California to the sapphire depths of Crater Lake in Southern Oregon, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway is more than a road—it’s a journey through the story of fire and water. Along the way, travelers encounter towering peaks like Mount Shasta, labyrinths of lava tubes, shimmering lakes alive with birdlife, and small towns steeped in history and Native heritage. It’s a drive that invites you to slow down, explore, and witness landscapes shaped by the earth’s most powerful forces. This fantastic road trip will start in Redding, CA, where you will begin your journey at Lassen Volcanic National Park. You will then drive north along the Byway, explore Lava Beds National Monument, Mount Shasta, Tule Lake, and other volcanic landscapes. After an amazing journey at Crater Lake National Park, you will then fly out of Medford, OR .


Ideally, you would want at least a week to 10 days to complete this journey for a fully immersive experience.


Day 4 - 6: Mount Shasta region – add kayaking or a scenic drive around the mountain.

Day 6 (stop through): Lava Beds National Monument – explore multiple caves, plus wildlife at Tule Lake.

Day 6 - 7: Klamath Falls & Upper Klamath Lake – birding, kayaking, and cultural sites.

Day 7 - 10: Crater Lake National Park –hike, take the rim drive, and soak in the views.

Mazama Village Cabins

The Cabins at Mazama Village are located high in the Ponderosa pines, seven miles south of Rim Village. The rustic cabins provide comfortable relaxation after a day of hiking, swimming, fishing, or touring the lake.

Renovations of the cabin interiors were recently done to provide even more comfort while staying at Crater Lake National Park.

Located in the village is the Annie Creek Restaurant and Gift Shop. You will find American cuisine for lunch and dinner, and plentiful selection of wine and local beer. The gift shop offers a wide selection of souvenirs to take a piece of Crater Lake National Park with you. Located nearby is the Mazama Village Store that has your everyday needs of groceries, camping supplies and firewood.

Things to do at Crater Lake:

At Crater Lake National Park, the must-do activities include driving the 33-mile Rim Drive, hiking trails like Mount Scott and Cleetwood Cove, taking a boat tour to Wizard Island, and enjoying stargazing or snowshoeing depending on the season.

• Rim Drive: A 33-mile loop around the caldera with over 30 overlooks, offering different perspectives of the lake’s deep blue waters.
