"Collect moments, not things."

Who says you need a passport to experience old-world charm? These American coastal towns transport you straight to Europe with their cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and scenic seaside vistas—proof that a touch of the Mediterranean or a slice of the French Riviera might be closer than you think.

Le Petit Pali

4-Star Hotel

One of a pair of Le Petit Pali hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Le Petit Pali at Ocean Avenue takes the trademark nostalgia-tinged Palihotels style to another level. Even the bigger, more urban Pali properties feel charmingly home-like, but the bed-and-breakfast–inspired Le Petit Pali inns are even more so; this one, at 34 rooms, is pleasantly intimate, and a fine match for the relatively tranquil atmosphere of this classic California coastal town.

The rooms and suites range from relatively cozy queen rooms to more expansive kings and a one-bedroom, 470-square-foot suite. Some come with gas fireplaces, and all of them freely combine vintage- and antique-inspired furniture and artworks with unobtrusively modern boutique-hotel comforts: rain showers, Nespresso machines, Marshall Bluetooth sound systems, and SMEG mini-fridges.

In keeping with Le Petit Pali’s European inspiration, it features a daily Champagne Continental breakfast, with pastries from the local Rise + Roam and marmalade from Marmalade Grove. There’s also a daily social hour — six hours, if we’re counting — serving California wines and other drinks alongside light bites from other local purveyors. And while a full lunch and dinner service are beyond Le Petit Pali’s ambitions, you’re well placed to explore the local culinary scene.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, offers a distinctly European flair, thanks to its Danish colonial history, cobblestone streets, and historic architecture. It feels like stepping into a European seaside town, blending Caribbean vibrancy with Old World charm.

Best time to visit:

  • Winter (December–March) – Ideal for escaping the cold, with warm temperatures and minimal rainfall.

  • Spring (April–June) – Pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and great conditions for outdoor activities.

  • Summer (July–September) – Hot and humid, with a higher chance of rain, but still a vibrant time to visit.

  • Fall (October–November) – Hurricane season peaks, so travel plans may be affected.

Where to stay:

The Pink Palm

3-Star Hotel

Set not on the beach but in downtown Charlotte Amalie, the Pink Palm is reminiscent of the very first boutique hotels — a unique experience that’s a distinct alternative to the island’s more typical beach resorts. In the 1940s and ’50s this was the capital’s most in-demand guest house, and in its new incarnation it aims to recapture that atmosphere. The adults-only policy certainly doesn’t hurt, but more essential are the Pink Palm’s ultra-chic rooms, designed in a knowing homage to the house’s mid-century heyday. El Barsito, the poolside restaurant, boasts impressive views out to sea.

Marriott's Frenchman's Cove

4-Star Hotel

Set on a picturesque hillside overlooking the azure waters of Pacquereau Bay, Marriott's Frenchman's Cove is a breathtaking complement to the beauty of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The resort is reminiscent of a quaint village surrounded by a secluded beach with amazing views of the bay and St. Thomas harbor. Like the nearby historic town of Charlotte Amalie, the design of the St. Thomas resort reflects the Danish and British architectural influences set amidst a colorful tropical landscape. The spacious two- and three-bedroom villa rentals feature separate living and dining areas, full kitchens, gracious master suites, and furnished balconies or patios. Relax in the sparkling infinity pool with a waterslide, keep up with your workout routine at the fitness center, dine al fresco at our poolside restaurant, or partake in family-friendly activities for all ages.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas (25 minutes' drive from Charlotte Amalie)

5-Star Hotel

It’s hard to think of a way to do St. Thomas in bigger style than the Ritz-Carlton. The compound sprawls out over thirty secluded acres on a peninsula at the island’s easternmost point, right up against the waters of Great Bay, with postcard-perfect views of the deep turquoise sea and a steady stream of photogenic sailboat traffic — this Ritz has moorings for the not inconsiderable number of guests who arrive by sea.

This secluded location means you can disappear here almost better than you could at a private beach house. Though the facilities are almost comically expansive — two private white sand beaches, four restaurants, a vast full-service spa and fitness complex, and more meeting facilities than you could possibly care about — the Ritz-Carlton feels smallish, even intimate, which is of course one leading measure of the success of a place of this sort.

Rooms are outfitted in classic Caribbean colonial style, each with a private balcony or terrace, and the suites are huge, almost a thousand square feet, all with ocean views. And in case you’re the unlucky soul who’s turned up without a sailboat of your own, you can always take out a loaner, the 53-foot catamaran Lady Lynsey.

Things to do in Charlotte Amalie:

  • Coral World Ocean Park – Get up close with Caribbean marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, and sharks. You can even try a Sea Trek Helmet Dive or Snuba Dive for an immersive underwater experience.

  • Coki Point Beach – A lively beach with snorkeling, BBQ spots, and beach bars—perfect for a relaxed day by the water.

  • Drake’s Seat – A scenic lookout offering panoramic views of Magens Bay and the surrounding islands.

  • 99 Steps & Blackbeard’s Castle – Climb the historic 99 Steps, built from Danish ship ballast stones, leading to Blackbeard’s Castle, a 17th-century watchtower.

  • Fort Christian – The oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands, built by the Danish in the 17th century, now serving as a museum.

  • featuring a unique sand-covered floor.

  • St. Thomas Synagogue – One of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere,

  • Honeymoon Beach – A secluded paradise with soft sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a peaceful retreat.

  • Paradise Point – Take a gondola ride up 700 feet for breathtaking views of Charlotte Amalie’s harbor, plus a restaurant and gift shop.

  • Shopping on Main Street – Explore duty-free boutiques, jewelry stores, and artisan crafts in the heart of town.

Pendry Newport Beach

4-Star Hotel

For the Pendry brand an Orange County hotel is something of a homecoming, as its parent company, Montage, was born in nearby Irvine, California. The Pendry Newport Beach fits in between its Los Angeles and San Diego siblings, in a tower that stands over the Fashion Island shopping center. Once you’re inside, though, it’s hard not to feel transported to somewhere rather more far-flung, thanks to the Pendry’s talent for cultivating a resort-like atmosphere.

More than a few of the rooms and suites look out over the harbor, the bay, and the Pacific Ocean beyond; all are decorated in a style that’s equal parts Deco-inspired elegance and laid-back California cool. The rooms are generously sized, but nearly half of the units are suites, and the largest ones spread out to surprising dimensions, adding features like dining rooms and kitchenettes.

The Spa Pendry is a substantial one, as is the associated fitness center — no one has ever accused Southern California of paying insufficient attention to bodily health. Nor are dining and drinking neglected here. SET is a modern take on the classic steakhouse, Bar Pendry pursues excellence in craft cocktails, Tree Shack serves healthy Baja-inspired fare, and the Elwood Club, a private members’ club within the hotel, makes its Viamara restaurant and its Elwood Club Pub available to hotel guests when capacity permits.

Best time to visit:

  • Late Spring (Mid-May to June) – This is arguably the sweet spot. The island bursts into bloom during the Lilac Festival in June, and the weather is mild and pleasant. Crowds are lighter than in peak summer, and everything is open and lively.

  • Summer (July to early September) – Peak season! Expect sunny days, bustling streets, and full event calendars, including the Fudge Festival and Fourth of July celebrations. It’s the most vibrant time, but also the most crowded and expensive.

  • Fall (September to October) – A quieter, more romantic time. The fall foliage is stunning, and the island slows down, offering a more relaxed pace. It’s ideal for scenic bike rides and cozy carriage tours.

  • Winter (November to March) – For the adventurous. The island becomes a snowy retreat, with cross-country skiing and a peaceful, almost magical stillness. Many businesses close, but it’s a unique way to experience Mackinac’s charm.
