Join us as we explore accommodations where the scenery is not just a backdrop—it’s the star of the experience.

In this post, I will cover hotels in the following locations:

Brunelleschi Hotel - Florence, Italy

4-Star Hotel

There’s no question the Brunelleschi Hotel has a legitimate claim to the name. With its top-floor view taking in the entire panorama of Brunelleschi’s masterpiece, the Florence Cathedral, it’s more or less as close as you can get to the Duomo without taking religious orders. The location has always been a strength, and after a very thorough renovation, the Brunelleschi can finally boast of interiors that are worthy of the view.

That’s “worthy of,” not equal to. The focus, even inside, is on the cathedral, and these subtly contemporary spaces, with their sparkling antique-style furnishings, do their best to frame the views, whether literal ones, through the windows, or virtual ones in the form of architectural photographs of the cathedral’s details.

Key, perhaps, is the fact that it’s a hotel that would still function admirably in a less picturesque setting. The physical comforts are up to the current Italian luxury-boutique standards, complete with 42-inch televisions and plump platform beds.

Downstairs there’s a private museum, which does its best to unite the building’s historical threads, from the Roman caldarium to the old church foundation to the Byzantine-era tower. And of course, you’re surrounded by more history than you could reasonably be expected to absorb — not to mention more designer shopping than any one charge account could possibly handle. The restaurant, Santa Elisabetta, is certainly worth a visit; it’s been honored with not one but two MICHELIN Stars. And the same goes for the gym — it’s well-equipped, but you’d be better served walking Florence’s streets than racking up treadmill miles.

Unique Things to do in Florence:

Florence is a treasure trove of history, art, and surprises!

  • Michelangelo's Hidden Drawings – Discover secret sketches by Michelangelo in a hidden room beneath the Medici Chapel.

Bulgari Resort and Residences Dubai - Jumeirah Bay, Dubai

5-Star Hotel

The Bulgari Resort Dubai is at least as impressive as anything in town, and astonishingly tasteful at the same time. Its setting, on a man-made island in Jumeirah Bay, is what makes it a resort — this is no urban skyscraper hotel, but a low-slung building whose capacious balconies look either straight out to sea or back towards the Dubai skyline. Mashrabiya-style latticework provides an immediate sense of place, while the room and suite interiors by Citterio and Viel make use of the finest high-end Italian design elements — as in the Bulgari Milan, every detail feels perfectly chosen and impossible to improve upon.

And the facilities are similarly high-end, though in keeping with Bulgari’s philosophy, they offer substance as well as style. Il Ristorante - Niko Romito features a menu and staff hand-picked by the eponymous Michelin-starred Italian chef, and it’s joined by chef Masahiro Sugiyama’s Hōseki as well as a couple of more casual venues. Meanwhile the lavish Bulgari Spa is paired with a capacious fitness center, a lovely outdoor pool, and not just a luxe beach club but a yacht club as well. By Dubai’s standards, it’s far from over-the-top, but make no mistake; the Bulgari Resort Dubai is as good as it gets.

Unique things to do in Dubai:

Dubai is packed with extraordinary experiences beyond its famous skyscrapers! Dubai offers a mix of culture, adventure, and luxury!

  • Dubai Museum – Dive into the city's rich history at this fascinating museum in Al Fahidi Fort.

  • Al Bastakiya – Wander through Dubai’s oldest neighborhood, filled with charming wind towers and art galleries.

  • The Dubai Fountain – Watch the world’s largest choreographed fountain show at the base of Burj Khalifa.

  • Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum's House – Explore the former residence of Dubai’s ruling family, showcasing historical artifacts.

  • Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo – Walk through a massive underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks and exotic marine life.

Cap Juluca - Maundays Bay, Anguilla

5-Star Hotel

Anguilla’s Maundays Bay, with its cartoonish turquoise waters and its splendid white sand beach, is already one of those places that’s almost too beautiful to be real. Add to that a sprawling complex of villas in a fantasy-world Moorish-meets-Santorini architectural style and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable experience. And it doesn’t hurt that Cap Juluca has long been one of the Caribbean’s top luxury resorts. But now, in its new incarnation as the Belmond Cap Juluca, it’s somehow more impressive than before.

You can trust Belmond to bring a hotel up to international luxury standard without fundamentally altering the character of the place. The interiors are, as ever, a mix of Mediterranean elegance and Caribbean chill, and the close proximity to the beach means every room, suite, and villa has an ocean view, as well as a private terrace and in some cases a private pool — and the spa is as lavish as ever.

The location is somewhat secluded, so it’s convenient that Cap Juluca should come with a handful of restaurants and bars, to keep your evenings varied — the menus pay tribute to the local culinary culture, and the settings, no surprise, make the most of the ocean views. The island life doesn’t get much better than this.

Mandarin Oriental, New York

5-Star Hotel

Located in the north tower of the $1.7bn Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle, the Mandarin Oriental brings Far East hospitality to America’s hottest hotel market. The Asian influence is apparent at a glance, with wood paneling, marble everywhere, and clean Zen-influenced design. And even the hotel's placement, occupying twenty stories near the top of a mixed-use skyscraper, mirrors the situation of Tokyo’s grandest luxury hotels — the Mandarin Oriental New York is directly connected to the Time Warner shopping center, and piggybacks atop office and retail spaces to maximize views of the Hudson and Central Park (though the Trump Tower edges in on the action).

This is one of the only big business hotels in New York with a contemporary look — the guest rooms are sleek, minimal, with stylish modern furniture. But the most remarkable design choice is the inclusion of floor-to-ceiling windows — corner rooms, especially, seem suspended in air high above midtown Manhattan, offering a view that’s hard to match in New York’s more traditional luxury hotels. The fittings are as modern as the furnishings, with high-speed internet, in-room laptop charging safes, and flat-screen TVs in bedrooms and bathrooms. And those bathrooms are an attraction unto themselves, with separate marble baths and enclosed showers, and, in suites, vast picture windows affording bathers views of the Hudson and the park.

The only potential drawback is the price. Upon opening, the Mandarin Oriental made headlines with the most expensive hotel suite in this already expensive city — the Presidential Suite, a palatial plate glass wonder, will set you back by the price of a modest mid-sized automobile for each night. But there’s always room at the top, and if there is a place for such an upscale hotel, New York is it. The facilities are top of the class, and the service, while perhaps less obsequious than that in the Far East Mandarins, is among the city’s best. Don't take our word — travelers vote with their dollars, and have been doing so consistently since its late 2003 opening.

Unique Things to do in New York:

New York City is packed with extraordinary experiences beyond its famous landmarks!

  • Top of the Rock – Enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of NYC from the 70th floor of Rockefeller Plaza.

  • One World Observatory – Rise above the city at the top of One World Trade Center for unmatched views and immersive experiences.

  • Empire State Building – Visit one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers and take in breathtaking views from its observation decks.

  • Sunset Park North Historic District – Explore beautifully preserved historic buildings that showcase the rich architectural heritage of Brooklyn.

  • Brooklyn Bridge Park – A scenic waterfront park with incredible skyline views, roller skating, and outdoor events.

  • The Elevated Acre – A hidden garden oasis above the city streets in the Financial District.

  • Mmuseumm – A tiny museum housed in a freight elevator, specializing in overlooked and unusual objects.

  • Lexington Candy Shop – The oldest family-run luncheonette in NYC, serving food and drinks the old-fashioned way.

  • Trinity Place Bank Vault Bar – A lower Manhattan bar set up in an old bank vault beneath a skyscraper.

  • Chinatown Ice Cream Factory – Try unique flavors like pandan, lychee, and black sesame at this family-run institution.

Santa Caterina Hotel - Amalfi, Italy

5-Star Hotel

It’s the rare traditional-style hotel that really gets hearts racing, but the Santa Caterina is an absolute classic. Family-owned for the better part of a century, it sits high on a hillside facing the sea and the town of Amalfi — guests ride an elevator down to the hotel’s private beach, for the ultimate storybook Italian-coast experience.

Santa Caterina is the real deal: the grounds are all terraces, olive groves and lemon orchards, with the kind of jaw-dropping views that make the Amalfi one of the world’s most special places. The look of the building, and of the interiors, is charmingly old-fashioned; there’s no attempted design-boutique guff here, and it comes off timeless rather than dated.

The signature restaurant takes in the spectacular view from a terrace on the cliff, while a second serves wood-fired pizza beside the salt-water swimming pool, on the lower deck by the seaside. It’s up there with the best hotels on the Amalfi Coast: elegant yet fairly unpretentious, for what it is, with a bit of the air of a private residence about it, something many lesser hotels try in vain to cultivate.

Unique Things to do in Amalfi:

Amalfi is a breathtaking coastal town with stunning scenery, rich history, and unique experiences!

  • Villa Rufolo – A historic villa in Ravello with beautiful gardens and panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast.

  • Amalfi Cathedral – A magnificent 9th-century cathedral with intricate architecture and a stunning staircase.

  • Grotta Dello Smeraldo – A magical sea cave with emerald-green waters, accessible by boat.

  • Church of Santa Maria Assunta – A historic church in Positano, famous for its majestic dome and Byzantine icon.

  • House of Loreius Tiburtinus – A hidden archaeological site in Pompeii, showcasing ancient Roman gardens and frescoes.

  • Path of the Gods – A breathtaking hiking trail offering unmatched views of the coastline and Mediterranean Sea.

  • Paper Museum (Museo della Carta) – Learn about Amalfi’s ancient papermaking tradition in a restored 13th-century mill.

  • Fiordo di Furore – A hidden fjord with a picturesque beach, nestled between towering cliffs.

  • Ravello Music Festival – Experience world-class concerts in an open-air setting with stunning coastal views.

  • Lemon Tours – Discover Amalfi’s famous lemon groves, taste limoncello, and learn about local traditions.

Santorini Secret Suites & Spa - Santorini, Greece

5-Star Hotel

Hospitality works a bit differently in Santorini. For one thing, thanks to the astounding volcanic backdrop, you could just prop a cot on a hillside and call it a day. Consequently, subtler shades of service come into play, especially in the quixotically cliff-hugging neighborhood of Oia, perched (depending on perspective) either on the southern shore of the island’s “upper hook” or the north lip of its submerged caldera. Since everyone gets a view, hotels define theirs by elevation to make it exhilarating; since all the cuisine bursts with ultra-fresh flavor, they work regional curveballs into their plates. And so forth.

That’s more or less the “secret” in Santorini Secret, an 18-suite contender on the Cycladic roster, and do they ever deliver. Their genius distills the formula instead of upending it, incorporating delicate, fine-tuned luxury elements into the region’s hallmark visual cues. Which is to say: the all-white, thickset walls and smoothly curved ceilings still play a massive role in the aesthetics; here, they come with volcanic and floral accents indoors and all the sea-gazing accoutrements you’ll need. Sunbeds, oversized parasols, and heated jacuzzis or infinity pools (de rigueur around these parts) seriously upgrade the definition of “private veranda.” This is where the benefit of elevation comes into play — from a promontory like this, you’ll have uninterrupted gawktime for the postcard construction, tumbling like building blocks down to the shore, lime-washed and daubed with Grecian blue.

The island’s pumice soil has a profound effect on the produce, yielding sweeter varies of tomato, eggplant, and cucumber; you owe it to yourself to taste them in action at the Black Rock Restaurant. The cuisine is “post-modern” Greek, where traditional ingredients and recipes are given a contemporary twist. See if you can find yourself some Vinsanto — Santorini’s uniquely unctuous dessert wine — and retire to your boudoir for a flaming-peach sunset.

Unique Things to do in Santorini:

Santorini is a breathtaking island with stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique experiences.

  • Red Beach – A striking volcanic beach with red-hued cliffs and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

  • Amoudi Bay – A picturesque fishing village below Oia, known for fresh seafood, cliff diving, and stunning sunset views.

  • Akrotiri Lighthouse – One of the oldest lighthouses in Greece, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

  • Fira to Oia Walk – A breathtaking hiking trail along the caldera, providing unmatched views of Santorini’s iconic whitewashed villages.

  • St. John the Baptist Cathedral – A beautiful Catholic church in Fira, featuring stunning architecture and peaceful surroundings.

  • Watch the Sunset in Oia – Santorini’s world-famous sunset, best enjoyed from Oia’s cliffs or a seaside restaurant.

  • Explore Atlantis Books – A charming bookstore in Oia, known for its rare finds and literary treasures.

  • Scuba Dive in a Volcano – Experience underwater volcanic formations and explore a sunken shipwreck.

  • Visit the Ancient Ruins of Akrotiri – A Minoan Bronze Age settlement, often called the Pompeii of the Aegean.

  • Wine Tasting at Santo Wines – Sample local volcanic wines while enjoying breathtaking caldera views.

Shangri-La Paris - Paris, France

5-Star Hotel

Paris is one city that’s certainly not lacking for home-grown high-gloss luxury hotels. Of course there’s always room for another good one, and the Shangri-La group has spent decades honing its expertise in the major markets of the Far East, which has to be good preparation for Paris’s notoriously exacting clientele. And when it comes to hotel interiors designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the more the better.

In fact, the only thing Far Eastern about the place is the name; though it’s a recent restoration, the Shangri-La plays the part of grande dame to a tee. The building was formerly the residence of one Roland Bonaparte, whose surname provides all the biography you need — from there the choice of 19th-century Paris as a stylistic inspiration was an entirely natural one.

So convincing is Rochon’s work that you’ll marvel at the condition of the rooms and suites — it’s impossible to remember that they’re brand-new and not just meticulously well-kept. Of course, certain modern innovations do provide some clue: the electronics are quite seamlessly integrated, and the bathrooms play a central role, as is the contemporary fashion.

There’s an outstanding Cantonese restaurant called Shang Palace, as well as a high-end French option, La Bauhinia, set under the grand glass cupola at the heart of the hotel. And there’s a subtle Asian influence in the cocktail bar, too, as the bartenders in this Empire-style lounge are happy to pour a Pékin Express.

Unique Things to do in Paris:

Paris is full of hidden gems and unique experiences beyond its famous landmarks.

  • Explore the Catacombs of Paris – A vast underground ossuary holding the remains of over six million people.

  • Visit Shakespeare and Company – A legendary bookstore that has housed traveling writers for decades.

  • Discover the Petite Ceinture – An abandoned railway circling the city, now a secret urban hiking trail.

  • See the Secret Apartment in the Eiffel Tower – A hidden space once used by Gustave Eiffel himself.

  • Tour the House of Nicolas Flamel – The oldest stone house in Paris, built by the famous alchemist.

  • Experience the Montmartre Cemetery – A secluded resting place ruled by a colony of stray cats.

  • Walk Through the Bibliothèque Nationale de France – Once home to the largest book collection in the world.

  • Visit the Musée des Arts et Métiers – A museum filled with steampunk-style inventions and automata.

  • Explore the Covered Passages – Hidden 19th-century shopping arcades with vintage boutiques and cafés.

  • Dine at Roger La Grenouille – A quirky frog-themed restaurant once frequented by Picasso and Saint-Exupéry.

Southern Ocean Lodge - Kangaroo Island, Australia

5-Star Hotel

Bringing crisp minimal design out of the city and into the wild, Southern Ocean Lodge is a shining example of very modern and very Australian architecture: clean open spaces, neutral tones and tons of glass wrapped in an environmentally friendly package. Located on Kangaroo Island just off the South Australian coast, Southern Ocean Lodge is unexpectedly hip for such a remote and rugged locale, sporting a cool, unlabored vibe that doesn’t interfere with its beautiful coastal surrounds.

Comprising 25 sea-facing rooms, the SOL hovers over the mallee scrub, offering wide views of ocean, sky and whatever fauna happens to venture past: expect anything from kangaroos to echidnas to native birds. Inside, paintings by local artists complement pure white walls, with bespoke furniture and Ecosmart fireplaces creating the type of relaxed, uncluttered feeling one vows to recreate at home.

Tuning out is the main past time at the SOL (only the Family rooms have TVs) and guests can choose to do this on their private terrace, in their sunken lounge, or on one of a long list of nature tours. The surrounding national parkland offers so much by way of exploration — sea lion-spotting, kangaroo-meeting and hiking included — that the lodge provides each guest with a custom itinerary. Of course, some may opt to do nothing more demanding than enjoy the property’s gourmet meals and open bar, including a walk-in cellar stocked with locally produced and imported wines, all included in the tariff.

Daily sunset drinks in the lodge’s Great Room allow guests to swap travel stories while taking in views of the Southern Ocean. An onsite spa with floor-to-ceiling windows offers a further chance to unwind while watching — and being watched by, presumably — the local wildlife.

Unique Things to do on Kangaroo Island:

Kangaroo Island is a dream destination for adventure seekers and wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Seal Bay Conservation Park – Walk among a colony of wild Australian sea lions in their natural habitat.

  • Remarkable Rocks – Marvel at these massive granite formations, sculpted by wind and time.

  • Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park – Get up close with koalas, kangaroos, and exotic birds.

  • Raptor Domain – Witness spectacular bird-of-prey shows, featuring eagles, owls, and falcons.

  • Cape du Couedic Lighthouse – Enjoy breathtaking coastal views from this historic lighthouse.

Taj Lake Palace - Udaipur, India

5-Star Hotel

The Taj Lake Palace floats on the calm surface of Lake Pichola and was built in 1740 as a summer retreat, taking advantage of the cooling lake breezes. The Taj group took over in the Sixties, and the hotel has since become standard postcard (and Bond film) material.

The standard rooms face inward, overlooking the courtyard and its lily pond; not a bad view in itself, but the slightly better rooms face outward. Many suites have private balconies, and all rooms and suites are quite modern, despite the old-fashioned and opulent décor, with central air conditioning and satellite television. This is, after all, a Taj hotel, and though the location is unconventional and wonderfully secluded, it is a world-class luxury hotel.

Dining and drinking options are plentiful within the hotel, with room service and the café available 24 hours a day. This is still the sort of place which is perfect for a romantic getaway, or just a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, with a picturesque backdrop and flawless old-world service.

Unique Things to do in Udaipur:

Udaipur, often called the City of Lakes, is a mesmerizing destination in Rajasthan, India, known for its palaces, temples, and scenic beauty. The city is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills, creating a picturesque backdrop for its historic architecture and tranquil lakes.

  • Saheliyon-ki-Bari – A beautiful historic garden with fountains, lotus pools, and marble pavilions, built for royal maidens.

  • City Palace – A majestic palace complex offering breathtaking views of Lake Pichola and showcasing Rajput architecture.

  • Jagdish Temple – A 17th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, known for its intricate carvings.

  • Fateh Sagar Lake – A serene lake perfect for boat rides, with stunning views of the surrounding hills.

  • Maharana Pratap Memorial – A tribute to the legendary Rajput warrior, featuring a statue of Maharana Pratap and his horse, Chetak.

  • Badi Lake & Bahuballi Hills Viewpoint – A hidden gem offering panoramic views of Udaipur’s lakes and landscapes.

  • Yoga & Meditation Retreats – Experience peaceful yoga sessions in scenic locations around Udaipur.

  • Art & Henna Classes – Try your hand at traditional Rajasthani miniature painting or henna art.

The Dolder Grand - Zurich, Switzerland

5-Star Hotel

The century-old Dolder Grand was impressive enough as it was, but it entered a new league following a massive renovation by the British architect Norman Foster. This isn’t just a refreshed interior for an old hotel, but a complete re-design, with a bold contemporary addition wrapping around the original turreted hilltop château.

Inside, it’s almost unrecognizable. Rooms in the main building and the new wings alike are spacious, the design restrained and contemporary, the amenities completely up to date, right down to the enormous marble bathrooms. There’s nothing aggressively edgy or avant-garde about it, but neither is it at all business-hotel drab — in fact this just might be the state of the art in high-end luxury hotels.

It’s intended as something of a “city resort,” and the location, high on a hill just outside of central Zürich, goes a long way in creating that away-from-it-all atmosphere (while still just a taxi ride away from the city center). The massive spa and wellness center don’t hurt either, and there are more than enough dining and drinking options — including chef Heiko Nieder’s two-MICHELIN-Starred restaurant — to make a stay at the Dolder as self-contained as you want it to be.

And while the ordinary rooms and suites are already extraordinary, both in style and luxury, it’s the signature suites that are truly jaw-dropping. Each is by a different designer, each sprawls over hundreds of square meters, and each one comes with extras like steam showers, whirlpool baths, in one case even a grand piano — it’s no exaggeration to say these are some of the most impressive hotel suites we’ve ever seen.

Unique Things to do in Zurich:

Zurich is a blend of history, art, and quirky attractions.

  • Cabaret Voltaire – Visit the birthplace of the Dada movement, where avant-garde art and literature flourished.

  • Oepfelchammer – A 200-year-old tavern where guests are challenged to finish a glass of wine while hanging from a ceiling beam.

  • MFO Park – A public park built from an old machine factory, covered in vines and offering a unique urban escape.

  • Moulagenmuseum – A museum dedicated to wax representations of disfiguring diseases, offering a fascinating look at medical history.

  • Sukkulenten-Sammlung Zürich – One of the world’s largest succulent collections, featuring rare blooms like the "Queen of the Night" cactus.

  • Haus Hiltl – The oldest vegetarian restaurant in the West, serving a meatless buffet fit for royalty.

  • Heureka Useless Machine – A kinetic artwork with no purpose, created by Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely.

  • Kulturama – An evolution museum showcasing skeletons and natural history treasures.

  • Freitag Tower – A tower made from recycled shipping containers, offering panoramic views of Zurich.

  • Fondue Tram – Enjoy a traditional Swiss fondue while riding through the city on a tram.

Waldorf Astoria - Las Vegas, Nevada

5-Star Hotel

There aren’t many cities where a luxury hotel as relentlessly high-end as a Waldorf Astoria would feel bracingly, refreshingly understated, but the desert-bound theme park that is Las Vegas is one of them. The brand’s clean-lined modernist design and discreetly professional service is appealing enough anywhere, but here it’s a breath of life — and frankly, for a lot of guests, it will transform Vegas from deliciously, ironically kitsch to just plain delicious.

The scale of the place is big by our standards but relatively intimate for Las Vegas. The 392 rooms were designed by Adam D. Tihany, and they’re portfolio-perfect exemplars of his quietly stylish approach. They start out somewhat modestly sized, but by the time you’re in a suite you’re looking at a thousand-plus square feet — and the views of the Strip, for all its absurdity, are nothing short of astounding.

It’s a casino-free hotel, which will likely make it very appealing to a certain segment. The spa is world-class, as you’d expect, as is the dining — the signature restaurant, Twist, features the inventive modern cooking of the eminent French chef Pierre Gagnaire. As a stand-alone experience, this Waldorf Astoria, like any of them, is impressive enough — as a base from which to experience (and then escape) the Strip, it’s a stroke of genius.

Unique Things to do in Las Vegas:

Las Vegas is packed with extraordinary experiences beyond its famous casinos.

  • Fremont Street Experience – A vibrant pedestrian mall with dazzling light shows and live entertainment.

  • Fountains of Bellagio – Watch mesmerizing water displays choreographed to music in front of the Bellagio Hotel.

  • Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area – Escape the Strip and explore stunning desert landscapes with hiking and rock climbing.

  • The Mob Museum – Dive into the fascinating history of organized crime and law enforcement in the U.S.

  • The Neon Museum – Discover the history of Las Vegas through restored neon signs from iconic casinos and businesses.

  • Pinball Hall of Fame – Play vintage pinball machines and arcade games in this nostalgic attraction.

  • Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum – Explore eerie artifacts and paranormal exhibits curated by the famous ghost hunter.

  • Dig This – Operate real construction equipment like bulldozers and excavators in a giant sandbox.

  • Lion Habitat Ranch – Visit a sanctuary home to lions, including descendants of the MGM Grand’s famous lions.

  • Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart – Step into an immersive art installation filled with surreal and interactive exhibits.
