“A great hotel doesn’t just host your journey; it becomes part of the story.”
From the misty mountains of Vermont to the rugged coasts of Maine, the sun‑washed cliffs of California, and the quiet elegance of New England’s most storied inns, these are the American stays that turn travel into something unforgettable. Each property — from the secluded artistry of Twin Farms to the oceanfront charm of Newport Beach, the timeless romance of The Chanler, the lakeside magic of Montana, and the serene luxury of Rancho Valencia — offers more than a place to rest. They offer a feeling, a moment, a memory waiting to be made. This is a curated collection of the most amazing hotels in the United States, where every check‑in begins a new chapter.
This post will feature the following exceptional properties:
Twin Farms
Barnard, Vermont
5-Star Hotel

Surrounded by 300 acres of farmland and wilderness, Twin Farms might be as secluded as you can get without leaving the Northeast. It also might be the region’s most luxurious resort. In some places that might mean a modern hotel complex, but in Vermont it means a few rooms in Sinclair Lewis’s old farmhouse, surrounded by a handful of cottages, all with interiors by the 20th-century eclectic traditionalist Jed Johnson (and, as of late, five more cottages sporting a more contemporary look by Thad Hayes).
The accommodations, in either style, are unfailingly upscale, with antique furnishings alongside a mix of impressive contemporary artworks and well-chosen folk pieces. Satellite TV and fast internet are there lurking just beneath the low-tech surface, stone fireplaces are universal, and the bathrooms are a fantastic blend of old-world charm and modern-luxe indulgence.

Things to do at Twin Farms:
Outdoor + Adventure
Hiking on miles of private trails — manicured paths, stone steps, mountain viewpoints, and picnic platforms.
Biking — cruisers, hardtails, and pedal‑assist e‑bikes with up to 50‑mile range for exploring the estate or riding to Woodstock.
Canoeing, kayaking & paddleboarding on Copper Pond or nearby Silver Lake.
Archery & axe throwing at the supervised range.
Swimming in Copper Pond — often blissfully quiet.
Tennis & pickleball on dedicated courts.

Spa treatments, yoga, and guided wellbeing experiences.
Culinary Experiences
Chef‑curated picnics anywhere on the property — mountaintop, pondside, or forest.

White Barn Inn & Spa, Auberge Collection
Kennebunkport, Maine
5-Star Hotel

White Barn Inn & Spa is one of America's finest country house hotels, a rustic and intimate inn (and now, a cottage compound) down by the waterfront in the Atlantic coast town of Kennebunkport, Maine. This is a town perhaps best known outside of the Northeast as a presidential summer home, but long before the elder Bush first arrived, it was a popular hideout for the Yankee aristocracy.
And even the name is a bit of classic Northeast understatement — it sounds a bit more rough-edged and rustic than it actually is, although the restaurant (more on that later) is, truthfully, a 140-year old white clapboard barn. The hotel's look is more English manor house than Pilgrim settlement, though it's not a strict period piece: rooms in the new addition come with flat-screen TVs, and many rooms and suites feature other welcome (if anachronistic) details, such as granite and marble bathrooms with oversized whirlpool tubs.
Kennebunk Beach is less than a quarter mile away, but Parson's and Goose Rocks beaches are more private, and well worth the trek. The town is full of antique dealers, book shops, art galleries and museums, and there are a number of fine restaurants, but truthfully they pale next to the White Barn Inn Restaurant — the hotel's focal point and possibly New England's finest. The list of awards the restaurant has won is truly exhaustive, and would be exhausting to read; suffice to say your dinner will be one you will not soon forget.

Rancho Valencia
Rancho Santa Fe, California
5-Star Hotel

Think San Diego and you’re likely to think of crashing surf, Pacific ocean breeze, and, less pleasantly, mobs of tourists feeding parking meters down by the beach. Just north of the city, though, a few miles inland from Del Mar, is the Rancho Valencia Resort, a quiet retreat in a private canyon near the affluent residential community of Rancho Santa Fe.
This place could be Southern California’s best-kept secret—unless you’re a tennis enthusiast, in which case you may well be here for one of the world-renowned clinics, or a private session with one of the coaches. Most guests, though, are here for an escape, a resort an easy drive from both Los Angeles and San Diego which nevertheless offers a measure of discreet seclusion.
Accommodations are scattered about the grounds, hacienda-style, with one or two suites to each casita. Suites feature cathedral ceilings, hand-painted tiles, fireplaces, and above all a generous measure of space; one benefit of the inland location is that one avoids the jockeying for the best westward view and the endless stacking of buildings as close to the beach as possible. Instead each suite opens through French doors onto a private patio with outdoor seating and a view all its own.
Service is impeccable, the surroundings are luxurious, and the cuisine exceeds all expectations; the Rancho Valencia serves sophisticated California specialties under whitewashed beamed ceilings, around a mission-style courtyard. Almost frighteningly luxurious and restful, especially considering the convenient location—you’ll never miss the ocean, much less the atmosphere of the seaside resorts.

Little Nell
Aspen, Colorado
5-Star Hotel

The Little Nell’s unassuming name can’t hide the fact that it might just be the finest ski hotel in the United States. Even in Aspen, a city that’s no stranger to slopeside luxury, this is, for many of its guests, the only game in town. It helps that its location, at the foot of the Silver Queen Gondola, is the very definition of ski-in/ski-out. And while it’s been an A-list favorite for more than a generation, it’s never content to rest on its laurels — the most recent renovation, by the New York studio Champalimaud Design, leaves it looking like the very picture of modern mountain luxury.
This means vanishingly few gestures toward rustic ruggedness. A glance outside, after all, offers unmistakable evidence of the Rocky Mountain setting. Instead you’ll find soothing neutrals, clean lines, substantial spaces, and, quietly, all the physical comfort you could ask for. (The bathrooms, in particular, are extraordinary.)
And if the accommodations are near-faultless, the common spaces are more than capable of keeping up. The Spa at The Little Nell is perfect for some restoration after (or instead of) a day on the slopes. Element 47, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, might be the hottest ticket in town. The slopeside Ajax Tavern is perfect for après-ski, and the wine cellar contains some 20,000 bottles. All this in the very heart of Aspen, which, let’s not forget, is still the most glamorous town in the Mountain West.
